16th Street Bridge

This project included the replacement of existing bridges with a six-span, continuous curved, steel plate, girder bridge on drilled caisson foundations. The project was completed with 32 caissons with depths in excess of 115'. Precast, post-tensioned, pier cap beams were supported on conventional CIP concrete piers founded on drilled caisson foundations. Abutments were also supported on drilled caisson foundations.
The westbound bridge has a total length of 655' and the eastbound bridge has a total length of 598'. Each bridge is 57.25' wide and carries 3, 12' traffic lanes, with 12' outside and 6' inside shoulders.
Challenges included tight over head and lateral access with active traffic on I-64 east and west and Hal Greer Boulevard.
