LRT 002 Overbrook Line

Location: Pittsburgh, PA
Owner: Port Authority of Allegheny Co.
General Contractor: Brayman Construction Corporation
Value: $25,200,000
Date Complete: 2002

Scope of Project:

Brayman broke ground on the 2nd of three separate contracts for the Port Authority’s reconstruction of their 5.5 mile Overbrook Line in the Fall of 2000. The Overbrook Line connects South Hills Junction to Castle Shannon as it serves the communities of Bon Air, Overbrook, and Castle Shannon.

The contract consisted of the 1.5 mile portion of the new roadbed for this light rail transit line, including the clearing/grubbing, furnished/installed aggregate subbase, and erosion/sedimentation control devices between the South Hills Junction and Denise Street.

The scope of this contract was extremely diverse as it included the construction of two bridges, three concrete passenger station foundations, excavation & drainage, and both cantilevered and anchored permanent soldier beam retaining walls. 400,000 cubic yards of rock and soil was excavated and over 586 - 36” diameter drilled shafts were required for the soldier piles including rock sockets up to 20 feet in length.

Using Value Engineering services, 670 anchors were installed in the 94,600 sf retaining wall portion of this project saving the Port Authority $500,000.
