Guntersville Lock and Dam

Location: Guntersville, AL
Owner: Tennessee Valley Authority
General Contractor: Brayman Construction Corporation
Value: $960,000
Date Complete: January 2004

Scope of Project:

Brayman drilled and installed 24 each, high capacity, post-tensioned rock anchors to depths of 150 feet. The improvements were completed to enhance stability concerns within the lock monoliths. Fourteen inch diameter holes were initially drilled, water-tested, and consolidation grouted as required. Brayman measured the alignment along the hole length using specialized equipment. High density polyethylene corrugation was used as the corrosion protection. Upon grouting only the bond length portion of the anchor, all anchors were either performance or proof tested. Two-stage grouting techniques were used for the free-length portion of each anchor. Once complete, 4,000 psi concrete was used to backfill the 30-inch diameter recesses drilled into the monolith.
