Scope of Project:

This project was for the installation of a slag cement-bentonite slurry wall as part of a dam crest improvement project for the Taylorsville Dam. This dam is part of a five-dam system managed by the Miami Conservancy District to control floodwaters over the 5,000 square mile Great Miami River Basin. The Brayman staff was also involved on the previous improvement of two other dams for this client, one involving a slurry wall and the other a soil mixed cutoff wall.

The 2,500 ft. long slurry wall is necessary to raise the impermeable core of the dam to minimize seepage through the dam during maximum flood stage. The wall has a maximum depth of 38 ft. By utilizing Brayman’s high capacity batch plant which continuously monitors cement and bentonite addition rates, Brayman was able to provide a consistent quality, self-hardening slurry which met or exceeded the required 100 psi compressive strength and maximum 1 x 10-6 cm/sec permeability requirement.
