The purpose of this project was to provide increased seismic stability of an existing dam by constructing a new earthen buttress 140lf high x 250ft wide at the base x 1450lf long along the downstream slope of the existing dam.

Preparatory work consisted of clearing and grubbing 120 acres of adjacent property to obtain suitable borrow material and constructing access erosion, and sedimentation measures including over 12,000ft of new access roads for off-road transport of the required materials.

The project also required construction of a 30 x 1300ft toe trench at the base of the buttress including a 3000ft dewatering system with 220 eductor wells and 15 deep wells.

Over the two-year long project, working around the clock, more than 1.3 Million cubic yards of new embankment was placed. After placement of the embankment, borrow pit closure, access road and sedimentation pond restorations, and re-forestation of all impacted areas of the site was completed.
