Multi-Phase Project: Phase

New River Parkway

The New River Parkway is a Heavy Civil Project encompassing the construction of just over five miles of new roadway, while maintaining traffic along the New River in Hinton, WV. The West Virginia Department of Highways is the owner of this project with involvement by the National Parks Service and other Federal Agencies. This project is challenging due to the fact that an existing lane and a half road is already in place and traffic must be maintained while constructing the new two lane roadway within the existing lane and a half road.

The roadway consists of 101,000 CY of excavation with the placement of subgrade and base stone along with the asphalt paving along the five mile project. Along this five mile roadway, over 8800LF of storm drainage pipe and 115 inlet structures will be installed to control the storm water along the new road. Further, over 14,000LF of steel piles had to be drilled and set in 10 different retaining walls along the project, around 12,000SF of concrete lagging and over 14,000SF of wood lagging was also placed in the retaining walls.

Other features of the project include the installation of four pre-cast box culverts and one cast in place concrete box culvert, each with architectural finished and colored concrete wing walls. All visible concrete placements on the project are either a colored or colored with an architectural finish so that the new features of the project blend in with the natural surroundings of the scenic parkway.

While constructing this project, a primary objective is to protect the environment as the New River meanders to entire length of the project with the primary protection being over 28,000LF of super silt fence along with over 28,000LF of normal silt fence. Working with the citizens who live along the project and providing safe passage for them and the general public is a substantial part of the project as well.
