Multi-Phase Project: Phase

VDOT L55

The Virginia Department of Transportation contracted Brayman Construction for the replacement of the Hardy Bridge over the Roanoke River/Smith Mountain Lake in Hardy, VA. This project consists of four and one-half- feet drilled Shafts at the abutments and six and one-half-feet drilled shafts at the river piers. With the water in the lake, being over 40 feet deep and the environmentally sensitive and recreational area Brayman elected to use barges for the construction of this bridge. The abutment fills consisted of over 35,000 ton of rip rap to ensure the stability of the new roadway.  The existing truss will be demolished at the completion of the project.
